Throwback: When Sushmita Sen Took Back Her Miss India Pageant Form As Aishwarya Rai Was Participating - WATCH
The year 1994 was a very eventful one for India. Two ladies went on to win the prestigious beauty pageants. Sushmita Sen won the Miss Universe crown while Aishwarya Rai turned the first runner-up and brought home the Miss World crown. But did you know, this wouldn't have been the scenario if Sushmita Sen hadn't listened to her mother? In an old interview, Sushmita Sen revealed that she has taken back her entry form by getting scared of Aishwarya Rai.

On Jeena Issi Ka Naam Hai, Sushmita Sen recalled that almost 25 girls took back their entry forms as they got to know Aishwarya Rai was taking part in it. Sushmita Sen too got scared of Aishwarya and decided to back out from the pageant. But it was her mother who motivated her. Sushmita said, "My mother said ok fine let her win. If you think that she's the world's most beautiful then loose from her. What's the point of loosing from someone else? Go give it your best shot."

The Miss Universe then went on to remember her victory moment. Aishwarya Rai was awarded as the first runner-up, and that made Sushmita cry on stage. She thought she has lost it and couldn't even come to win the first runner-up tag. Little did she know that she was the winner of the pageant and it became the most cherished moment of her life.

Sushmita Sen also spoke about her winning gown which was made by a tailor under their apartment. "We did not have so much money to afford designer gowns on stage; we were supposed to wear four different costumes. We are middle-class people and we knew our restrictions. My mother said, ‘So what? They are not going to look at your clothes, they are going to look at you.’ So we went to shop at Sarojini Nagar market (a flea market in Delhi). Downstairs, in the garage, there was a local tailor who made petticoats. We gave him the material and told him, ‘This will come on TV, so do a good job.’ He made my winning gown out of that fabric, and my mother made a rose out of the remaining fabric," she said.
